Hanna Somatic exercise classes teach gentle, easy movements that are often dramatically effective at eliminating pain and stiffness and increasing movement and flexibility. Hanna Somatic movements can be done by anyone, no matter what condition you’re in, and no matter what physical problem you may have. These movement classes focus on regaining a first person sense of awareness of how the body is supposed to move when relaxed and coordinated. Participants report an improved sense of control, balance, coordination and awareness of their movement. The more you learn to sense and control your muscles in movement, the more mastery you will have over your own body. You will become your own best teacher.
People are often told that their chronic aches and pains are the natural result of aging. This misconception is what Thomas Hanna called "The Myth of Aging." Chronic muscular pain and tight muscles has more to do with learned habits of tightness and a loss of sensory awareness than with age. Whether you're 16 or 60, Hanna Somatic exercises will help you to reverse Sensory Motor Amnesia (the real cause of muscular stiffness and discomfort commonly attributed to aging), the state of habitually tight muscles that contribute to chronic pain and limited movement. There are several different workshops and classes offered, such as “Releasing the Legs and Hip Joints”, (see testimonial) “Re-thinking Scoliosis”, “Somatic Exercises for the Lower Back ”, “Somatics for Pain-Free Neck and Shoulders” and “The Myth of Aging Series”. Click “class schedule” for current classes and workshops.
The most basic series is “The Myth of Aging” - a series of eight lessons designed to override Sensory Motor Amnesia and teach you to regain your flexibility, freedom of movement, posture and coordination. In this series you will learn the fundamentals of Somatics, plus an entire self-care exercise routine that you can do anytime, anywhere to help keep you flexible, supple, more balanced and coordinated.
