What is Hanna Somatics?
Somatics is a revolutinary form of pain relief through movement. It is a gentle form of neuromuscular movement reeducation by which you learn to recognize, reverse and release chronic pain patterns associated with stress, traumatic injury, surgery or repetitive motion strain. Accidents, injuries, trauma, and stress can lead to habituated muscular dysfunction, which can cause a physiological inability to voluntarily control or relax muscles. These functional problems often appear structural in nature. They can, however, be reversed by addressing the muscles that hold one tightly in that particular condition: the waist muscles in regards to scoliosis, the deep back and hip muscles in regards to sciatica or the large muscles of the back in the case of chronic back or neck pain, for example.
In Hanna Somatics you learn to use your brain to change your body. In regaining conscious control of your muscles you also regain flexibility and ease of movement! It is simple, straightforward and highly effective.
Who can benefit from Somatics?
Anyone who moves can benefit from Somatics! Those with old sports injuries, repetitive use injuries, pain caused by poor posture and those recovering from trauma can benefit from Hanna Somatics. Many of my clients are those who have tried just about every “therapy” available for their discomfort, only to experience temporary relief. People who feel they have lost their flexibility and are experiencing aches and pains that they attribute to ”just getting old” will discover a different way of looking at the aging process. They will learn that those aches and pains are often a result of Sensory Motor Amnesia, the condition become involuntarily and chronically tight due to a constant response to stress reflexes. Those who want to become more aware of how their movement affects their body can also benefit from Somatics.
How is Somatics different?
Somatics gives you RAPID PROGRESS: most conditions resolve in between three and six sessions.
Somatics is INTERACTIVE: YOU are the one directing your healing process. Your Hanna Somatic Educator is your teacher, teaching you to change the state of your body through intelligent movement.
Somatics TEACHES YOU SKILLS: the exercises and methods of muscular release and self-awareness you learn can be used throughout the rest of your life. You can do them anywhere, anytime.
Somatics targets SENSORY MOTOR AMNESIA: SMA is the condition that occurs when we learn to hold ourselves tightly in reaction to pain, injury, surgery or stress. The ONLY way to effectively address SMA is by engaging your brain to release the muscles.
What happens during a private Somatics session?
You will be asked to wear loose, comfortable clothing as you will be guided through gentle, easy, specific movements that are under you control and within your comfort level. We will address specific full body reflex patterns, focusing on specific muscles of the body, methodically releasing them with your active involvement. You will be given self-care exercises to do at home that will continue your progress. They can be done anytime, anywhere and take minutes a day.
How often does one need Somatics?
It is beneficial to initially commit to three sessions of Somatics. In these sessions we will address all three specific holding patterns of the body. Most clients generally need between three and six sessions.
